Ahead of the Socceroos do die group game against Denmark, Rale Rasic, the man who led Australia at the 1974 Germany World Cup says Tom Rogic must play 90 minutes.
After Australia’s narrow 2-1 loss in their opening group game against France, the Socceroos need at least a draw against Denmark if they are to remain in the hunt to make the knockout stages.
Rasic was in charge of the Socceroos at their first ever World Cup in Germany 1974, where Australia suffered losses against East and West Germany before gaining a credible draw with Chile.
He believes Australia can build on their gutsy performance against France and signalled out the Socceroos' Celtic star as the man who could take the team to the promised land
"You never know when Rogic is going to do something special and he doesn’t know because he is a freak," he said speaking to FourFourTwo.
“So, Rogic is one who always has to be kept on the pitch in case he does something impossible and he does impossible things with Celtic.”
“We can play well against Denmark and Peru because the attitude of the Socceroos is phenomenal.
“Aaron Mooy is good but Tom Rogic is the player of the moment."
Rasic also had praise for Australia’s captain but wasn’t a fan of his grooming.
“Mile Jedinak is also very important,” he said.
“When he plays well the team plays well. But he would play better without that beard.
“He’s probably not in the best form but his presence is important and his experience is needed as he organises people around him.
“The defence of Trent Sainsbury and Mat Ryan who were exceptional against France will also be very important against Denmark.”
The former Socceroos coach also had praise for the current national team manager and believes Bert van Marwijk can lead Australia to the knockout stages.
“He is one of the most experienced coaches in world football,” he says.
“The man’s record is impeccable I have a lot of respect for him.
“I’ve heard comments against Van Marwijk tactics. Go back to school and learn.
“Football is all about scoring goals and conceding less than you score. Then you think about beautiful football. You want to play beautiful football and lose 5-0?
“If we kept playing for that point against France we would have one foot in it, but I honestly do think we can get points against Peru and Denmark.
“Being compact is the most important part of the game. Denmark is much similar to us than France.
“Anything can happen and Australia is capable of causing a surprise at this level of competition.”
