Wellington Phoenix must win Saturday’s home clash against Western Sydney Wanderers, according to coach Chris Greenacre.
Phoenix are in the middle of a logjam of four clubs battling it out for two finals spots, from fifth-placed Perth Glory down to eighth-placed Western Sydney.
Wellington are only a point ahead of Wanderers going into Saturday’s match, adding to the importance of the contest according to Greenacre.
“We have to win. End of story,” Greenacre said.
“It’s really important. There’s a real congestion in the middle part of the table.
“The teams that get on a roll towards the end of the season building into finals, will be the teams who do well.
“We want to be one of those teams.
“It’s really important we put in a really solid performance and take the game to Western Sydney.
“It’s going to be a tall order but we’ll be up for the fight.”
Wellington have claimed seven points from their past four games to rise into finals contention.
Phoenix claimed a 2-2 draw away to Adelaide United in hot conditions last round but Greenacre signalled it was unlikely he’d make many, if any, changes.
“Not at the minute but we’re keeping our cards close to our chest,” Greenacre said.
“We’ve got one or two options with this squad.
“We’ve got a lot of flexibility in what we can do with formations.
“We’ve got a good game plan and hopefully it’s enough to get the win.”
