The talented midfielder, who turned 26 yesterday, suffered the injury while playing for Pupuk Kaltim (PKT) Bontang against Persela Lamongan on March 7 when he was fouled by Deni Tarkas.

Tarkas was booked and Abdi had to be stretchered off before being taken to hospital.

He was later discharged but was unable to digest food for the next two days and had to be rushed to hospital again where doctors found an internal injury.

They made an immediate decision to operate on the player but Abdi slipped into a coma and passed away this morning.

"This has to be the last time that a fatality shall occur in relation to football in this country," said Vennard Hutabarat, the president of the Indonesian Professional Footballers' Association (APPI).

Jumadi Abdi previously played for Pelita Jaya and Persikota Tangerang before joining PKT Bontang at the start of the season.

He played for Indonesia's Under-20 and Under-23 teams and had been called up for national team training although he had yet to make his full senior debut.
